Two-Thirds of a Reflection
It's August, and that terrifies me.
I started the year with some goals. They were general, and there wasn't a grading structure applied, but I had set myself guidelines for how I wanted to shape my year, and now that I have a moment to reflect on how that's been going. This will be largely informal, but maybe if you've also set some goals like this, my post can remind you that the year's not over, and there's time to check in with yourself and perhaps course correct if the ship's drifting astray.
Since I'll be going over these at the end of the year, I think I'll separate the following thoughts into two parts; successes, and places I can improve.
THINGS THAT ARE GOING WELL
I've done a fairly good job keeping on track with my Warhammer Fantasy Battle sixth edition projects, as they've been Trojan Horsed into the structure of the Old World Army Challenge. Last month I wrapped on my Chaos Gnomes project which I've yet to blog about here. In my tricksy foresight, I wanted to finish the project with a bang, having my first OWAC army fight my second. This required the amassing of a home terrain collection that was sufficient for the battle, and is now getting tidied up to my personal standard. The important part was that there was a battle, and I've another scheduled for not too long from now, so things are shaping up quite nicely for goals 1, 4, and 5.
In addition, I've also participated in at least two challenges, winning one that I hadn't realized was winnable, and have hopes to do more in the future (3.) I'm also in the process of clearing my desk (slowly but surely as a byproduct of cleaning my room,) and unearthing my blog (as you can tell by the words that you're reading.) I haven't touched my newsletter this year, but never say never (10!) I do make a newsletter and blog professionally, so one might think one habit would rub off on the other...
THINGS THAT COULD BE GOING BETTER
I have wanted to sculpt, and write games, and draw books (2, 6, and 7,) but sometimes a Ben is only so strong and only so clever. In part, these goals have been to help against the recession/depression we're staggering into in the United States, but also because I miss these forms of expression and the communities that they intermesh with.
There's also a hunger I've noticed, where people want to be the makers and not the consumers, because we've been fed enough, but then there's the question of what happens to makers when no one consumes? I've tried to be a conscientious consumer (something that might make a good newsletter topic,) giving my little time and money to smaller creators rather than industry giants, but I haven't quite found the balance between being a supportive member of the community and supporting my own hopes and dreams. The good news is, there is no timeline, so doing your best and working towards better is always an acceptable course of correction when working on self-improvement.
SINCE WE'RE HERE, I'M GOING TO LIST SOME THINGS I'M EXCITED ABOUT, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER
